War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Proceeded to Gallipoli on board 'Ionian', 11 September 1915; taken on ration strength of unit at Gallipoli, 17 September 1915. Commended by Army Commander for invention of loop-hole for night firing, 22 November 1915. Promoted Lance Corporal, 25 December 1915. Evacuated from Gallipoli, and disembarked at Alexandria from Mudros, 9 January 1916. Reverted to the ranks at his own request, 13 February 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 23 March 1916. Appointed Temporary Corporal, 4 April 1917; Armourer Staff Sergeant, 1 July 1917. Severely reprimanded, 9 August 1917, for 'conduct prejudicial' in that he fell out of a route march without permission. Granted furlough to England: fell sick and admitted to hospital, 10 January 1918 (piles). Discharged from 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, and granted furlough to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 18 January 1918. Commenced return to Australia, 31 January 1919.
