Meritorious Service Medal 'For marked devotion to duty and conspicuous courage during period from 22nd September, 1917 to 24th February, 1918. As a linesman and runner he has been called upon during the above period to do much important and dangerous work in maintaining telephone lines and carrying messages, especially during the operations in October, 1917 before PASSCHENDAELE. Despite heavy shelling and adverse weather conditions, his work has always been carried out in the best possible manner and with commendable promptitude.'
