'This man displayed great bravery and devotion to duty in the attack on POLYGON WOOD on 26th September 1917. He was first to reach the first "pill-box" encountered by his Battalion in the advance and he posted himself at the door. he dealt with the first German to appear and compelled the remaining 6 or 7 to surrender. This action gave the men near him great confidence and inspired them to rush every succeeding stronghold. After consolidation Private Smith went out in front and searched a wounded enemy Officer whom he had observed to be lying there.'
