'During operations near ZONNEBEKE east of YPRES from Oct. 2nd to 9th, 1917, Pte. SMITH acted as a Headquarters Runner and on many occasions carried important messages to and from the front line through enemy barrages. On the night of 3rd/4th October when a Company of Devon Regiment were coming out of the line they were severely knocked about by enemy shelling; Pte. SMITH rendered great assistance by helping wounded men to cover and rendering first aid to them. This was done under particularly trying circumstances owing to the darkness of the night and heavy enemy shelling. Throughout the operations Pte. SMITH'S courage and devotion to duty were marked.'
