'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the attack on WESTHOEK RIDGE on 20th September 1917 he did most excellent work as a stretcher bearer, and bandaged and carried in numbers of men under heavy fire. He asisted materially with the consolidation of the line, and volunteered for any dangerous work. He showed a splendid example of coolness and courage.'
