Military Medal 'On April 5th, 1918 at Relay Posts between Lavieville and Buire Private SMITH worked without rest for 24 hours stretcher bearing. The line of evacuation on which he was working was over particularly heavy ground which was swept by enemy machine gun fire. His quiet courage and indomitable well inspired his squad to further efforts when they were all but exhausted. In this way he was instrumental in keeping the evacuation going, through a very severe and trying period, when any delay in clearing casualties would have kept the wounded without cover in a heavily shelled area.'
