Military Medal 'On the night of 2nd May, 1918, Driver BOURKE was shell driver in a pontoon wagon returning home through COURTE CROIS, south of FLETRE, when the enemy put over a sudden heavy barrage. The near lead horse was killed by the first shell and fell with its driver; the remaining three horses were wounded. With great difficulty Driver BOURKE controlled his animals until blown out of his saddle by a shell bursting alongside him. The three animals then made off with the wagon. Instructing the brakesman to attend to the other Driver, he ran after and recaptured the team at the next cross roads, put the two fittest horses in the pole, handed over the third one to the other driver when he came up, and brought the wagon home.'
