Military Medal 'Gunner SMITH during the Operations on the taking of the PASSCHENDAELE RIDGE on the 9th instant, showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This man accompanied the F.O.O. during the attack and it was mainly through his bravery that several important messages were communicated to Group Headquarters whereby at least two concentrations of the enemy were frustrated and casualties inflicted. He faithfully remained at his post the whole day and during this period was constantly under shell and machine gun fire, several men being killed quite close to him which fact however did not interfere in the least with his determination to fulfil his duty. I strongly recommend that his man's services be recognised.'
