War service: Western Front Embarked from Sydney, 19 August 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 13 October 1916. Marched in to 14th Training Bn, Hurdcott, 8 November 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 14 December 1916; joined 54th Bn in the field, 24 December 1916. Sent to Field Ambulance, 28 January 1917 (varicose veins); transferred to 8th General Hospital, 31 January 1917; rejoined unit, 10 April 1917. Wounded in action, 15 May 1917 (multiple gun shot wounds); transferred to England,11 June 1917, and admitted to Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich. Transferred to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 14 August 1917. Granted furlough, 10 September-23 October 1917, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth. Found guilty, 27 October 1917, of overstaying furlough from 6 pm, 23 October, to 8.30 pm, 24 October 1917: awarded 3 days' confinement to barracks and forfeiture of 2 days' pay.
