'In the attack near VAIRE WOOD (east of CORBIE) on the 4th July, 1918, Private SMITH was in charge of a Lewis gun crew which during the attack encountered an enemy bombing post in a Sap which was strongly held. They charged the post, SMITH firing his gun from the hip, caused the enemy a few casualties and drove the remainder back. Later, while a block was being made, the enemy counter attacked along the Sap and 6 prisoners were taken but SMITH's Section. He set a splendid example throughout.'
