War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 10 November 1915; disembarked Suez, 7 December 1915. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 23 June 1916. Posted missing, 19/20 July 1916. In a statement made by Pte T J Blake on 23 November 1916, it was noted 'Cpl. Pollard, 1208, 29th. Batt., told me that he was with them [ Smith and 1262 F.S. Woodcock] when they were killed at Fleurbaix on July 19th. I think it was a shell that accounted for them.' 'Identification Disc received from Germany. No particulars afforded except the soldier is deceased. To be reported as KILLED IN ACTION, FRANCE 19.7.16.' on the authority of Assistant Adjutant General, ANZAC Section from War Office. A handwritten note on the bottom of the B.103 notes, 'buried in Fromelles, Sheet 36, N22 D & B'. Note on Red Cross File No 2550205: 'The above name appeared on German Death List dated 4-11-16'.
