Military Medal 'During the attack on LAGNICOURT on morning of 26th March 1917 this N.CO. showed conspicuous bravery and dash under heavy shell fire. During the mopping up in the Village of LAGNICOURT Sergeant SMITH led a small party of men in the face of heavy fire against an enemy machine gun and put it out of action. he also held out with a small party in an outpost position for 48 hours under heavy shell fire until relieved. Throughout the whole operation showed conspicuous gallantry in bringing in our wounded. He also captured several enemy snipers in the village who had concealed themselves during the advance and who were causing considerable casualties amongst our troops.'
