'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He successfully held a difficult position against counter attacks, and at a critical stage kept his Lewis guns in action with ammunition taken from casualties. He showed great resource and initiative in leading parties to attack enemy machine guns, and set a splendid example of contempt of danger to his men.'
