Military Medal

'For courage and devotion to duty. Near ZONNEBEKE on 17th/18th October, 1917, this N.C.O. was in charge of a party of men constructing a rough bridge over a swamp in THAMES WOOD. The party were located at work by a enemy aeroplane which directed artillery fire upon them. In spite of severe shelling he moved about the work and by his own example and disregard of danger kept the men in hand and carried on the work.'
