'During the attack on the FROISSY Heights by 1st Australian Division on afternoon of 23rd August, 1918, Private SOUTHWELL in company with Private CROCKER is specially recommended for gallant conduct and devotion to duty. Casualties in the Battalion, whose wounded, these men were clearing, were heavy and the Regimental Aid Post was heavily shelled inflicting casualties amongst the bearers. Nevertheless by the untiring efforts and utter disregard of danger of these men the Aid Post was quickly cleared and the patients removed to a place of safety. Their gallantry inspired their comrades to increased efforts and won the admiration of all who saw them.'
