Military Medal

'He was in charge of Battalion scouts from 5th May, 1916 and during the period of our occupation of BOIS GRENIER Line and nightly conducted and personally led all scouting parties. This work entailed great hardships owing to the water logged condition of NO MAN'S LAND and the work was extra dangerous, for the enemy at this period had a superiority in patrol work. In reference to his work at POZIERES on night of 26th July he went forward and reconnoitred the approaches to the German line prior to the Battalion attacking. Though alone, Sergeant SPARROW remained out for over an hour and returned with most valuable information. While leading the assaulting party that same night he was severely wounded.'
