Wounded in action, 29 June 1915 (multiple bomb wounds, right arm), admitted same day to New Zealand Field Ambulance, and thence to HS 'Sicilia'; transferred to Lemnos Island, 30 June 1915; to 19th General Hospital, Alexandria, 8 July 1915. Promoted Corporal, 10 July 1915. Transferred to England, 25 September 1915, and admitted to Reading War Hospital, 5 October 1915. Commenced return to Australia from Portland on board HS 'Star of Victoria', 19 January 1916; arrived Melbourne, 29 February 1916; discharged, Melbourne, 24 May 1916. Re-enlisted, 16 February 1917. Embarked Melbourne, 21 November 1917, as 7579 Sergeant, 8th Bn, 25th Reinforcements, on board HMAT 'Nestor'; disembarked Suez, 15 December 1917; embarked Alexandria, 18 December 1917; disembarked Taranto, Italy, 23 December 1917; re-embarked Taranto (date not recorded); disembarked Southampton, England, 9 January 1918, and marched into 2nd Training Bn, Sutton Veny.
