'During the advance near OMMIECOURT-les-CLERY, West of PERONNE, on 29th August 1918, this man was No. 1 of a Lewis gun. He moved his gun well out in front of his platoon and opened fire on a large party of the enemy that was opposing their advance. Although subjected to heavy rifle fire from the enemy he maintained his position and succeeded in killing and wounding a number of the enemy who were forced to withdraw, and thus enabled his platoon to advance. His personal courage and disregard of danger materially helped towards the success of the operation.'
