Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 20 July 1916. Red Cross File No 2550408O, note on file: 'The above name appeared on German death List dated 4-11-16.' Statement 3596 Pte A.S. Campbell, 12 Platoon, C Company, 55th Bn (patient, Norfolk War Hospital, England), 14 January 1917: 'H.N. St. Smith was killed at Fromelles on the night of 19th July. Eyewitness: No, it was officially reported to the Regt. S.N. Cantwell M. can confirm, don't know number.' Second statement, Major A.C. Selwyn Holland, 55th Bn, 24 January 1917: 'I made special enquiries for a friend a few days after St Smith was missing at Fromelles on 19th July and ascertained for a fact that he was killed while carrying ammunition across No Man's Land.' Previously reported missing, now reported killed in action, 20 July 1916, on the authority of the Assistant Adjutant General, ANZAC Section, 3rd Echelon, General Headquarters, British Expeditionary Force, 13 March 1917.
