Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Port Lincoln', 4 August 1915 (venereal disease); discharged, Melbourne [date unclear]. Embarked Australia, 31 March 1916. Taken on strength, 3rd Tunnelling Company, France, 25 June 1916. Admitted to 18th General Hospital, 2 October 1916; discharged from 51st General Hospital, 24 November 1916; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 54 days. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 31 March 1917. Foung Guilty of attempted theft (stealing public money from a safe in adjutant's room): sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Escaped from No 5 Military Prison, 3 July 1917; readmitted to prison, 3 February 1918. Remainder of sentence remitted as from 19 August 1918.
