Military Medal 'During the advance near LE VERGUIER on 18th September 1918 he was acting as Company Sergeant Major. He was of the utmost assistance in the forming up of the Company on the tapes, an operation which the heavy mist made most difficult, and after the advance had commenced and his Company Commander had been killed, he was indefatigable in his endeavours to keep touch throughout the Company. On one occasion when directing a section to its proper place he heard sounds of a bombing encounter and immediately led the section to the spot where he found a small party of our men almost surrounded by the enemy. Stevens at once came to the rescue and assisted in killing or capturing the entire occupants of a formidable enemy strong post. Throughout the operation and the succeeding days when the Battalion was holding the line his cheerfulness, courage and example were beyond all praise.'
