Disembarked Alexandria from Mudros, 10 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation); promoted to rank of Temporary Sergeant, Ismalia, 9 February 1916.

Embarked Alexandria and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 15 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 21 March 1916; to be promoted to rank of Sergeant, Morbecque, 9 February 1916; attached to 7th Brigade Headquarters, Armentieres, 7 April 1916. Transferred to 7th Brigade Trench Mortar Battery, 19 April 1916.

Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry in action. 'He kept the trench mortars supplied with ammunition' during an attack at Pozieres. 'By this fine example and pluck he got the carriers through under very heave fire', 2 September 1916.

Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, 5 November 1916, and transferred to 36th Casualty Clearing Station (gun shot wound, left shoulder); to 6th General Hospital, Rouen, 6 November 1916. Embarked Rouen on HS 'Western Australia' and proceeded to England, 8 November 1916; admitted to 2nd Southern General Hospital, 9 November 1916 (severe gun shot wound, shoulder); transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 15 November 1916.

Proceeded to France through Folkestone on 'Victoria', 15 February 1917; marched into 2nd Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 16 February 1917; moved out to unit, 25 February 1917; rejoined 27th Battalion in the field, 28 February 1917; detached to Light Trench Mortar Battery, 28 February 1917, and taken on strength.

Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, 11 March 1917, and transferred to 49th Casualty Clearing Station (gun shot wound, back); discharged to duty, 24 March 1918; rejoined unit from hospital, 28 March 1917. Marched into No 4 Officers Cadet Battalion, Oxford, 10 August 1917; appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 30 November 1917, and posted to General Infantry Reinforcements.

Proceeded to France through Southampton, 14 December 1917; marched into Australian General Base Depot, Havre, 15 December 1917; moved out from depot, 17 December 1917; marched into 2nd Australian Divisional Base Depot, 19 December 1917; marched out to unit, 21 December 1917; joined unit in the field and taken on strength, 25 December 1917; seconded for duty with 7th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, 21 February 1917; detached to 10th Corps Light Trench Mortar School for instruction, 23 February 1918; returned for secondment, 14 March 1918; to be promoted to rank of Lieutenant, 12 April 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 15 August 1918.

Proceeded to United Kingdom on leave, 11 October 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 27 October 1918.

Admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, 9 November 1918, and transferred to Casualty Clearing Station (gonorrhoeal orchitis); transferred to 39th General Hospital, Havre, from 2nd Stationary Hospital, 10 November 1918. Proceeded to England on Hospital Ship, 15 January 1919; admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford; discharged to Training Depot, Parkhouse, 26 March 1919 (total period of treatment for venereal disease: 138 days); marched into No 3 Group, Codford, 30 March 1919; moved out from No 3 Group, 12 April 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on 13 April 1919; disembarked Adelaide, 6 June 1919. Appointment terminated, 5 August 1919.
