'During the operations of 20th September 1917 in the vicinity of GLENCORSE WOOD near YPRES, Sgt. STEWART was engaged on the construction of a strong point. He gave great assistance to his Section Officer in conducting his party through a heavy barrage to the site selected for the strong point, personally assisting one of his men who was wounded to a place of safety. He gave assistance also in marking out, and settling the party to work and in constantly directing its progress under fire. He twice went out in front of the strongpoint and dressed wounded men, procured stretchers and saw them despatched to the dressing station. He continued his work all day until he himself was seriously wounded. His magnificent example was largely responsible for the construction of an excellent defence work.'
