Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Villers Carbonnel on 29th Aug., 1918. Gunner Stewart as linesman maintained telephone communication under extremely heavy gas and H.E. fire. It was due to his personal courage and perseverance in effecting continuous repairs that his Battery successfully engaged and silenced an enemy Battery which had been causing large numbers of casualties to our advancing infantry.'
