Embarked Brisbane on HMAT 'Warilda', 5 October 1915. Moved out from 7th Training Bn, Zeitoun, 27 February 1916; taken on strength of 9th Bn, Habeita, 28 February 1916.

Embarked Alexandria on 'Saxonia' and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 27 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 3 April 1916.

Admitted to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 1 June 1916 (gun shot wound); transferred to Ambulance Train, 5 June 1916; to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 19 June 1916. Proceeded to England on HS 'St. Dennis', 8 July 1916, and admitted to 4th Northern General Hospital, Lincoln (gun shot wound, chest and empyema); transferred to No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Middlesex, 22 September 1916; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 26 September 1916.

Found guilty, 20 December 1916, of being absent without leave: awarded 12 days' detention; forfeited total of 24 days' pay.

Admitted to No 1 Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 4 January 1917; discharged from hospital, 21 February 1917 (total period of treatment for venereal disease: 49 days). Marched into No 4 Command Depot, Wareham, 11 March 1917. Transferred to 69th Bn, 22 March 1917, and taken on strength, 23 March 1917. Admitted to 16th Field Ambulance, Wareham, 30 May 1917.

Found guilty, 9 August 1917, of being absent without leave, 15 July, to 5.00 pm, 7 August 1917: awarded 23 days' detention; forfeited total of 47 days' pay; 21 days of sentence remitted, 9 August 1917; released from detention, 10 August 1917. Transferred to 9th Bn, 19 September 1917.

Proceeded to France through Southampton, 14 October 1917; marched into No 1 Australian Division Base Depot, Havre, 15 October 1917; marched out to 9th Bn, 18 October 1917, and taken on strength, Belgium, 20 October 1917.

Wounded in action, 24 April 1918; admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, 25 April 1918, and transferred to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station (shrapnel wound, hand); to Ambulance Train, 25 April 1918; to 2nd Australian General Hospital, 26 April 1918. Proceeded to England on HS 'Pieter de Conick', 27 April 1918, and admitted to 2/1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham; transferred to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, 7 June 1918; discharged on furlough, 24 June 1918. Marched into No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 15 July 1918.

Found guilty, 15 July 1918, of being absent without leave, 11.00 am, 6 July, to 3.00 pm, 14 July 1918: awarded forfeiture of 18 days' pay; forfeited total of 27 days' pay; marched into Overseas Training Brigade, 2 September 1918; marched into Machine Gun Base, Parkhouse, and taken on strength, 20 September 1918.

Proceeded to France through Folkestone, 28 November 1918; marched into Machine Gun Base Depot, Camieres, 29 November 1918; moved out, 1 December; taken on strength of 1st Machine Gun Bn, 5 December 1918; moved out from field, 29 January 1919; marched into Australian Infantry Base Depot, Havre, 3 February 1919. Proceeded overseas to England, 3 March 1919; marched into Overseas Training Brigade, Weymouth, 4 February 1919. Embarked Devonport on HT 'Suffolk', 12 April 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 5 June 1919, for onward travel to 3rd Military District. Discharged Brisbane, 30 July 1919.
