War service: Egypt, Western Front Joined 7th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 7 January 1916. Transferred to 59th Bn and taken on strength, 24 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Killed in action, 19 July 1916. Handwritten note on Form B103: 'Presume Buried in No Man's Land approx 5J90 43 to 5K02.5.1 Sheet Hazebrouck 5A'. Statement, Red Cross File No 2520804, 1744 Pte L.J. DUNN, A Company, 59th Bn (patient, No 9 General Hospital, Rouen), 26 June 1917: 'He was killed at Fleurbaix during the attack on the 19th July. I did not see him killed myself but my mate, A. Jamieson (1799?) of A Co., saw him lying on No Man's Land when he himself was coming back wounded from the attack. Jamieson turned him over to see if he was alive but found that he was quite dead. Jamieson told me this about two months later when we met in hospital. Both he and I had been wounded on the 19th, we had not met till then.' Second statement, 3351 Pte F. EARL, 59th Bn, 10 October 1917: 'I saw Casualty killed by shrapnel in the last ditch at Fleurbaix on the 19th July in an advance. He was not buried as far as I know, but I am not positive.'
