'For gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations to the east of YPRES on 15th October, 1917. This man was in charge of a Bearer Squad and in the evening of date mentioned he was called upon to clear a temporary congestion of wounded at a R.A.P.; he at once took his squad forward through a heavy barrage and worked until the post was clear. In doing so he had to pass twice through the barrage. He set a very fine example of pluck and endurance throughout the operations from 12th/20th October, 1917.'
