'On the morning of 4th October, 1917, this N.C.O. was in charge of a gun and crew on BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES. Though suffering a number of casualties and being under heavy shell and machine gun fire he kept his gun in action until it was blown out. He then obtained a German gun and ammunition and brought it into action. He remained at his post for six days under continuous shell fire. By keeping his gun in action he materially helped in consolidation. His courage and cheerfulness set a fine example to the men with shom he came in contact.'
