'During the attack on VAUVILLERS on 9th August 1918 the Company to which Private STURGESS belongs was subject to a very heavy Machine Gun barrage at close range. His Platoon Sergeant in endeavouring to locate the position of the enemy worked his way to a position well in advance of the remainder of his Company. Whilst there he was badly wounded and Private STURGESS with utter disregard of the danger rushed out and succeeded in dressing the Sergeant's wounds, and by great courage and skill returned with him to the trenches in rear, thus probably saving the N.C.O.'s life. His courage and skill while working alone under the heavy fire was the admiration of all.'
