'This N.C.O. displayed conspicuous gallantry during the 24 hours of 26th September, 1917, east of WESTHOEK. His devotion to duty and care for his patients was most marked. Time after time he went through heavy shell fire to collect wounded. On one occasion he set out under fire and established a new track for the bearer squads, thereby saving a number of casualties.'
