War service: proceeded overseas to France from England, 22 October 1916. Admitted to hospital, 3 December 1916 (haemorrhage, lung); transferred to England, 11 December 1916; admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, 12 December 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 25 April 1917; rejoined unit, 30 April 1917.

Wounded in action, 26 September 1917, and admitted to 54th General Hospital; transferred to England, 12 October 1917; admitted to Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds (gun shot wound, left knee, severe), 13 October 1917. Leg amputated above the knee. Transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 1 February 1918; granted furlough, 19 December 1917-5 March 1918.

Commenced return to Australia, 30 June 1918; discharged, 7 March 1919.
