Military Medal

'For gallantry and devotion to duty near VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 3rd May, 1918. During the advance a machine gun suddenly opened fire on his party from very close range. At once Private BOYLAN ran forward with a bomb killing or wounding all the crew. Undoubtedly his coolness and the rapidity with which he sized up the situation saved many casualties. His bravery throughout was most conspicuous.'
