'East of WESTHOEK during the attack on the 26th September, 1917, for conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. He laid lines to four Batteries under heavy hostile artillery fire and when all his wires were broken, he went out alone time after time and repaired them, thus keeping up telephonic communications throughout the operations. On several occasions he carried important messages to Headquarters under heavy fire when all lines had been cut.'
