Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on 30th August, 1918, in the vicinity of ROAD WOOD, north of CLERY SUR SOMME. Lance Corporal THOMAS' Company was holding an advance front line position. The enemy completely commanded the position with machine gun fire which was extremely heavy. This N.C.O. displayed great courage and initiative in obtaining communication with a post of the Company on the right. Sniping and machine gun fire was intense and three runners had been killed. Lance Corporal THOMAS worked his way towards our right post and by means of messages tied to stones kept in touch with the right flank. Under extremely trying conditions this N.C.O. displayed courage, coolness and ability above the average.'
