'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During one of our attacks, he was sent forward as a scout. He captured, single handed, an enemy machine gun, killing one of the detachment and taking prisoners the remainder. The information he also brought back to his company commander was of the greatest value. Throughout the attack, he displayed great courage and determination, and set a fine example to his comrades.'
