Evacuated to England and admitted to Norfolk War Hospital (influenza, severe), 26 February 1917; rejoined unit, 14 August 1917.

Reported missing in action (wounded in action: right leg wounded by bullet), 12 October 1917; subsequently confirmed taken prisoner of war.

Arrived in Holland from Germany, 13 January 1918; in England, 20 January 1918, and admitted to King George Hospital, Stamford St, London. Transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 27 February 1918; discharged to depot for return to Australia, 8 April 1918. Commenced return to Australia on board 'Dunluce Castle', 8 April 1918 (amputated right leg); transshipped to 'Karoola' at Suez, 27 April 1918; disembarked in Melbourne, 26 May 1918; discharged, 28 November 1918.
