Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of a post, he defeated a determined enemy attack. Later, when the officers and other N.C.O.'s became casualties, he took charge of the platoon, handling it with great skill and maintaining touch between the posts. He was the last to leave, carrying a wounded man.'
