'For gallantry and devotion to duty near VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 3rd May, 1918. With great determination Private THOMAS got through to his objective with his Lewis gun doing great execution with it. When his party had to withdraw and the enemy counter attacked he held them up completely causing heavy casualties and allowing his own party to withdraw safely. His coolness and courage at a critical time were magnificent and undoubtedly saved the lives of his comrades.'
