'At WESTHOEK RIDGE near YPRES on the 14th September 1917. When his fatigue party had lost their way in the darkness and under heavy shell fire he made a reconnaissance of the area at great personal risk from Machine Gun and shell fire, and returning led his parjty through safely. By his daring energy the party were able to carry out their task without mishap under THOMPSON's guidance.'
