Before enlisting Charles Thompson worked with the New South Wales Government Railways as a locomotive engine driver. Was wounded twice at Gallipoli.Wounded in the left arm needing hospitalisation at Lemnos and wounded in the right leg which resulted in his leg being amputated above the knee at Malta.
