'At WESTHOEK RIDGE near YPRES on the 20th September, 1917. During the enemy's barrage at 6.45 p.m. he fired his gun despite the heavy shell fire and supervised the men under his command. He kept his men cool and collected by a fine example of gallantry and an intelligent grasp of the situation.'
