'During the attack at Villers-Bretonneux on the night of 24-25th April, 1918, our advance was held up by heavy fire from a strong enemy post. Cpl. Thompson immediately organised a party of about 20 men and, working around, attacked the position. Beside successfully conducting the attack, which was made under heavy fire, he captured two machine guns, killed many of the enemy and took several prisoners. He was consistently brave, cheerful and set a fine example to all ranks.'
