Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He very daringly established himself in "No Man's Land" and opened fire with his gun on an enemy machine gun next, enabling our parties to advance. During our attack, he caused the enemy very heavy casualties. He volunteered to explore a trench where a large number of the enemy were concealed, and with his party dislodged them. His courage, energy, and initiative were of a very high order.'
