Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry on the 23rd day of August, 1918, at HERLEVILLE WOOD. During the advance, after his platoon Officer and Sergeant had become casualties, this N.C.O. took charge and led his platoon throughout the advance with great skill and daring. On one occasion when his Coy was temporarily held up he rushed forward at the head of a party of men and at the point of the bayonet cleared a wood and succeeded in capturing a number of prisoners. His prompt and timely action assisted his Coy in their further advance. He was the only N.C.O. in his Coy that survived the operation.'
