Joined Royal Artillery Cadet School, St John's Wood, England, 10 November 1916. Promoted 2nd Lt and posted to Field Artillery Reinforcements, 8 March 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 12 April 1917; taken on strength, 5th Field Artillery Brigade, 7 May 1917, and posted to 14th Battery. Promoted Lt, 1 August 1917.

Wounded in action, 16 October 1917 (gas, mustard); admitted to hospital, Wimereux, 17 October 1917; transferred to England, 5 November 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth; discharged to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 31 December 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 31 March 1918; rejoined 5th Field Artillery Brigade, 25 April 1918.

Wounded in action, 1 June 1918 (gas shell, mustard); transferred to England, 22 June 1918; admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, 23 June 1918.
