Wounded in action, France, 3-6 November 1916.

Declared illegal absentee by Court of Enquiry (absent from 9 January 1918), 9 February 1918.

On hearing that his mother was seriously ill, he returned to Australia on board HT 'Cooee' as a fireman/stowaway; first port of call was Hobart, where he received news from his father that his mother had died; whereupon he re-enlisted and entered camp at Claremont, 20 July 1918; while on leave he was arrested and returned to his ship, eventually reaching Melbourne, where he was paid off, and re-enlisted on 3 August 1918.

Discharged (medically unfit), Perth, 9 January 1918.
