'For gallant conduct whilst on patrol ... during the operations at GUEUDECOURT in November, he encountered single handed a German patrol of 1 N.C.O. and 2 men and succeeded in bringing them unwounded to our lines as prisoners. His work has been constantly good throughout, handling his men well under difficult and trying conditions.'
