Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery while on patrol work near BROODSEINDE on the night of the 19th/20th October, 1917. The patrol being halted TOWNSEND crawled out in front to reconnoitre a suspected enemy position. At this time the enemy opened fire on the patrol which was forced to retire. TOWNSEND, however, continued to crawl forward and returned later with very valuable information. He has set a splendid example and his patrol work has been of the greatest assistance throughout.'
