War service: Western Front Embarked Brisbane, 8 August 1916. Failed to embark at Fremantle, and found guilty of being absent without leave from 22 August 1916: awarded 14 days' confined to barracks, 16 September 1916, and forfeited 22 days' pay. Reported absent from HT 'Orontes', Durban, South Africa, 8 September 1916, until apprehended by Military Police, 8 September 1916, and sent to Base Depot: no disciplinary action taken at Durban. Disembarked Plymouth, England, 18 October 1916. On Command at Brigade Signal School, 25 February 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 13 May 1918; taken on strength, 9th Bn, 1 June 1918. Admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, 3 November 1918 (callosities), and transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville; to 1st Australian Convalescent Depot, Havre, 15 November 1918.
