'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in charge of a machine gun. In order to get a better position, he was moving his gun, when he found that a party of the enemy had got in behind him, and their fire caused all his team but one to become casualties. He shot one of the enemy with his revolver, carried the gun away himself, and got two men and some ammunition from another detachment, and brought his gun into action again.'
